The 3H Framework

Purposeful communication through Head, Heart and Hands.

  • HeadUnderstanding
  • HeartHuman Connection
  • HandsPurposeful Action

Head, Heart and Hands are presented in this order for clarity, but the dimensions may interact, overlap and reinforce one another in practice.

The 3H Framework™ for Purposeful Communication is an emerging practical framework for thinking about communication through three connected dimensions: understanding, human connection and purposeful action.

Developed through communication practice and now being examined more deliberately through learning, application and research.

The Question

What should communication make possible?

Communication is often judged by what happens while a message is being delivered.

Was the message clear?

Was the audience engaged?

Was it memorable?

The 3H Framework invites another layer of inquiry.

  • What did people understand?Meaning that can be followed beyond the words.
  • What human connection was created or strengthened?Relevance in relation to real experience.
  • What became possible to apply, practise or do?A next step appropriate to the context.

These questions led to a practical way of thinking about communication through Head, Heart and Hands.

Head · Heart · Hands

Three dimensions of purposeful communication.

01 — Understanding

Head

What should people understand?

Head concerns the clarity, meaning and understanding a communication experience helps make possible.

It asks communicators to consider what their audience needs to grasp, how ideas are organised and whether meaning can be followed beyond the words being spoken.

Questions this dimension invites

  • What is the central idea?
  • What needs to become clearer?
  • What should remain after the communication ends?
02 — Human Connection

Heart

What should people connect with?

Heart concerns the human dimension of communication — empathy, relevance, experience and connection.

It asks whether communication recognises the people receiving it and creates space for ideas to become meaningful in relation to their realities, experiences and emotions.

Questions this dimension invites

  • Why should this matter to the people receiving it?
  • Where does human experience enter the communication?
  • What kind of connection is being created?
03 — Purposeful Action

Hands

What should become possible?

Hands concerns application, practice and purposeful action.

It asks what people may be able to apply, practise, explore or do differently as a result of what they have understood and connected with.

Questions this dimension invites

  • What can be applied?
  • What can be practised?
  • What might people be able to do differently?

Hands does not mean that every communication must produce immediate behavioural change. Purposeful action may include reflection, experimentation, practice, decision-making or another context-appropriate next step.

The Relationship

Head, Heart and Hands belong together.

  • A message may be clear without feeling relevant.
  • It may create emotion without producing understanding.
  • It may ask for action without giving people sufficient clarity or connection.

The 3H Framework provides a way of considering these dimensions together.

The framework is not intended to suggest that human communication always unfolds in a perfectly linear sequence. Head, Heart and Hands can interact, overlap and reinforce one another depending on context.

A Different Question

Not only, “Did I communicate well?”

A communication-performance lens may ask

  • Was I confident?
  • Was I articulate?
  • Did I hold attention?
  • Did I deliver the message successfully?

A 3H lens additionally asks

  • What became clearer?
  • What connected?
  • What became possible afterwards?

This does not suggest that performance, confidence, articulation or delivery are unimportant. The framework introduces an additional way of examining communication alongside them.

Application

One framework. Different communication contexts.

The 3H Framework is being explored as a practical way of thinking across different communication and learning contexts.

01

Presentations

Considering what audiences understand, connect with and can apply.

02

Public Speaking

Moving attention beyond delivery alone toward meaning, connection and purposeful action.

03

Learning & Facilitation

Designing experiences that support understanding, reflection, practice and continued development.

04

Leadership Communication

Thinking about how communication contributes to clarity, human connection and appropriate action within groups and organisations.

05

Conversations

Exploring how everyday communication can become more intentional and responsive to context.

06

Community Practice

Supporting continued reflection and application beyond structured learning experiences.

These are contexts in which the 3H Framework™ is currently being explored and applied. Their inclusion does not imply that effectiveness has already been established across every context.

Context

Purposeful communication is not one-size-fits-all.

Communication happens within cultures, relationships, environments, languages and lived experiences.

What creates understanding in one setting may require adaptation in another. What feels connecting in one community may be interpreted differently elsewhere. What constitutes appropriate action also depends on circumstance.

For this reason, the 3H Framework is not intended as a script for making everyone communicate in the same way.

It provides three dimensions through which communication can be considered while leaving room for context to shape how those dimensions are expressed.

The dimensions remain. Their expression may change with context.

Development

A framework being built through practice, learning and evidence.

The 3H Framework began as a practical way of thinking about meaningful communication.

Through the 3H Foundation, its development is becoming more deliberate.

The current work includes designing learning experiences, observing application, gathering longitudinal participant data, examining how the framework operates across contexts and refining its concepts as evidence develops.

We are interested not only in whether people appreciate the framework during a learning experience, but in what — if anything — remains, connects and changes over time.

01

Practice

Applying the framework within structured communication learning experiences.

02

Learning

Observing how people understand, interpret and use Head, Heart and Hands.

03

Evidence

Developing approaches for examining what happens beyond the immediate learning experience.

A Note on Evidence

Curiosity before certainty.

The 3H Foundation is at an early stage of developing and examining the framework.

We distinguish between the ideas the framework proposes, what participants experience in practice and what evidence can responsibly support.

As the work develops, we intend to document what we learn, including where assumptions require refinement.

Principle 03

Evidence should precede scale.

Explore the Work

Understanding the framework is only the beginning.

The 3H Foundation is exploring what happens when Head, Heart and Hands move from an idea introduced in a room to something people continue to reflect on, practise and apply over time.
